My Help - Frequently Asked Questions

.NET

Microsoft .NET is deeply integrated into the Windows Server 2003 family. The .NET Framework enables an unprecedented level of software integration using XML Web services: discrete, building-block applications that connect to each other-as well as to other, larger applications-via the Internet.

Integral to the Microsoft platform, the .NET Framework provides the ability to quickly and reliably build, host, deploy, and use secure and connected solutions through XML Web services. The Microsoft platform provides a suite of developer tools, client applications, XML Web services, and servers necessary to participate in this connected world.

These XML Web services provide reusable components built on industry standards that invoke capabilities from other applications independent of the way the applications were built, their operating system or platform, or the devices used to access them.

With XML Web services, developers can integrate applications inside enterprises and across network boundaries with partners and customers. This advance in computing-opening the door to federated collaboration and more efficient business-to-business and business-to-consumer services-can have a significant potential impact on revenue. Millions of others can use these components in varied combinations to produce highly personal, intelligent computing experiences.

Other .NET benefits in the Windows Server 2003 family help application developers to:

  • Leverage their existing investments. Existing Windows-based applications for Windows Server run on Windows Server 2003 and can be easily repackaged as XML Web services.
  • Write less code and use the programming languages and tools they know. Windows Server 2003 features built-in application services, such as Microsoft ASP.NET, transaction monitoring, message queuing, and data access.
  • Use process monitoring, recycling, and built-in instrumentation to provide reliability, availability, and scalability for their applications.

All of these benefits are in the improved Windows Server 2003 application platform.

Business Card Website

If you register, or transfer, your Domain Name to Interspeed we can provide you with a FREE "Business Card" web page as part of our service.

Having this gives you the following benefits:-

  • List your contact details, so that anyone who types in your domain name can get that information.
  • FREE email forwarding to your ISP email address, so you can use your domain name email address as soon as you register your domain name
  • Add a photo or your company logo, if appropriate
  • Put in a paragraph of information about you or your comapny
  • Allows you to have a web presence and saves you the time of getting a "full-blown" web site up and running.
  • Total portability: If you decide to change your Internet Service Provider (ISP) you won't have to change your email or website address.
  • It says you're serious: Any business that has an email address that reads for example, richardsmith@yourcompany.co.nz is demonstrating that it is serious, it's here for the long haul.
  • It provides more information... Notice too that 'yourcompany' with a registered domain name is no longer providing free advertising for your ISP, instead it is able to give a contact name, YOURS!

And to keep it professional for you, we only add a discrete mention of our name at the bottom of the page, no garish advertising or banners.

How do I get a Business Card web page?

If you don't already have your Domain Name registered with Interspeed you can start by

Registering a Domain Name

or

Transferring your Domain Name

to Interspeed, and you will be able to set-up your FREE "Business Card" Web Site during the process.

Existing clients should log into MyPanel , and set-up this feature from there.

And when you are ready we can help with either web site design or other Email and Hosting options. Click here

CGI

Does Interspeed allow me to use my own CGI scripts?

Yes, certainly.

Each Linux hosting account has its own cgi-bin folder enabled which you can run .cgi and .pl scripts from. This can be found in the root directory of your hosting space, alongside the 'public_html' folder.

A cgi-bin can be created upon request for Windows hosting accounts.

Please Contact Support to request this.

You will also need to make sure the scripts permissions are set to 755. You can change permissions for hosting accounts on Interspeed's Linux servers through your MyPanel access or most reputable ftp clients.

Databases

What is a database and why would I want one?

A database is a collection of information. A computer can search the database and return a result depending on the questions asked.

For example, you may wish customers to place orders for products on your website. Information regarding the purchaser, their delivery address, and so forth, could be stored in the database.

You may also want to have all of your products in a database. These products could then be displayed, with prices, when a purchaser requests information on that product range.

What types of databases can I use with my Interspeed hosting account and what costs are involved?

There are no initial setup fees, but there is a monthly fee of $10- for enabling MySQL database usage for your hosting account.

You can then create the database and users through the MySQL link in your control panel and the database is then managed through the phpmyadmin link (also in your control panel).

Important points

* Always ensure you add the user/s to the database in your control panel or you will not be able to login to phpmyadmin

* If you require more than 1 MySQLdatabase, an additional fee of $10 per month (per database) is applicable.

* If your website is hosted on a Windows server, you can also use Microsoft Access databases.

Please Contact Support to request any DSNs you need created and please note, there is a limit of ***free DSNs per site. Extra DSNs will incur a setup fee of $10- per extra DSN.

Dedicated Servers

A dedicated server is a server that we purchase and own and lease to you. Typically we provide the server, colocation (the space for the dedicated server to go into) and bandwidth (data transfer or traffic).

There are a range of options that we are able to provide, and it is often a case of discussing those options with us.

To give you an indication, a server with the following specifications running a Linux operating system:

  • Pentium 4 - 2Ghz processor

  • 512MB RAM

  • 80GB hard drive

incurs a $600 set up cost, and costs $300 per month on a minimum 12 month term which includes colocation costs and 10GB of international data transfer / bandwidth per month.

The server will be fully functioning and configured for production with web, mail and other services installed.

The above is just one example of many we are able to provide.

Please Contact Us by telephone or email for further information.

Please be aware, you are never going to get optimal reliability running all of your web services on one stand alone server. You may also wish to consider what we have to offer with System Design Learn More or by utilising our Partner Plan Learn More, which addresses this type of problem.

Default Display Page

What should my ‘homepage’ be called?

For Interspeed’s Linux Hosting Accounts the filename of your home page should always be:

For Interspeed’s Windows hostings accounts you should use:

index.htm , index.html , default.htm , default.html , index.asp default.asp

Domain Name Benefits

Having got your domain name, just take a look at how useful it can be:

  • Total portability: If you decide to change your Internet Service Provider (ISP) you won’t have to change your email or website address.

  • You move, it moves: If you change your business address your ISP may not be able to get email to you at your new location – if you have your own domain name this isn’t an issue.

  • It says you’re serious: Any business that has an email address that reads for example, richardsmith@yourcompany.co.nz is demonstrating that it is serious, it’s here for the long haul.

  • Easily remembered… Try it for yourself, which organisation would you be more likely to remember - yourcompany@isp.co.nz or richardsmith@yourcompany.co.nz? Your own domain name will make it easier for people to remember your email address and website – even if they don’t know it, they may well guess it as yourname@yourcompany.co.nz whereas it’s much harder to guess which ISP you use (as in yourcompany@isp.co.nz).

  • It provides more information... Notice too that ‘yourcompany’ with a registered domain name is no longer providing free advertising for your ISP, instead it is able to give a contact name (Richard Smith).

About Domain Names - General

What is a domain name?

A domain name is a unique alpha-numeric name used to identify a particular computer (i.e. web server or mail server) on the Internet.

Domain names allow Internet users to type in a name, such as cocacola.com, to identify a numeric address such as 216.10.4.200. The purpose of domain names is to allow ordinary users connected to the Internet to find web sites and send email to addresses with familiar names such as "cocacola.com" without having to memorize the numerical addresses that actually locate the computers or servers on the Internet.

Why do I need a domain name?

Your Domain Name is your own unique identity: no two parties can ever hold the same Domain Name simultaneously; therefore your Internet identity is unique. It can be your online business card and provides email and website addresses that you own. Your Domain Name should closely relate to your brand or identity (For instance, your brand name or company name: ´company´.com, or ´company´.co.nz). Many people and businesses also register more generic domain names that relate to their industry or what they do. For example, a web site hosting company may wish to register hosting.com or webhosting.com and so forth.

Why would I want a Domain Name if I don´t have a website?

You can register a Domain Name and simply ´park´ it in our name servers for future use.  This will ensure the domain name is secured for you and cannot be registered by a third party in the interim.

About Domain Names - Types

What different types of domain names are there?

There are gTLD and ccTLD domain names. A top level domain (TLD) is the suffix that is attached to the end of a domain name. For instance, in the domain name cocacola.com, .com is the TLD.

There are two types of top-level domains: global and country code. Global Top Level Domains (gTLD) were created to be used by the Internet public, while country code Top Level Domains (ccTLD) were created to be used by each individual country, as they deem necessary.

The global Top Level Domains are as follows:

.com .net .org .edu .mil .gov

Some examples of country code top level domains are as follows:

.uk (United Kingdom)

.au (Australia)

.nz (New Zealand)

.ca (Canada)

.za (South Africa)

In New Zealand, the following second level domain name types are available:

.ac.nz - Tertiary educational institutions and related organisations

.co.nz - Commercial organisations and businesses

.gen.nz - Individuals and other organisations not covered elsewhere

.govt.nz - For Government departments and organisations.

.iwi.nz - Maori tribe, typified by a Trust Board

.net.nz - Organisations and service providers directly related to the NZ Internet

.org.nz - Not-for-profit organisations

.school.nz - Primary, secondary and pre-schools and related organizations

About Domain Names - Registration Process

How do I register a domain name with you?

The registration process is an easy process that is completed online.

Please Note: A valid credit card is required to register your domain name through us.

Step 1. Check for domain name availability. During this step, you will perform a WHOIS query to determine if the domain name you wish to register is available.

Step 2. Check domain name status. During this step, you may confirm that you wish to register the domain name you have chosen.

Step 3. Log in. During this step you will create a user name and password 'profile' which is used to identify your account in our system. If you are an existing user, you should enter the user name and password you have created to identify your account.

Step 4. Fill in contact information. You must provide us with administrative and organizational information to associate with your domain name registration.

Step 5. Review the information for accuracy. Before you submit your registration for processing, you have the opportunity to review the information you are submitting.

Step 6. Enter payment information and submit your request. During this step you must enter your credit card billing information and submit the registration for processing.

Top of page

What do I need in order to register a domain name?

To register a domain name you only need to specify the contact information and credit card billing information associated with your domain name. You do not need to specify a NIC handle, or DNS server information or an IP Address.

Top of page

How long does the registration process take?

Our registration process should only take a few minutes to complete. With .com, .net and .org domain names they may take up to 72 hours, which is considered normal Internet propagation time, until they are accessible.

cc-TLD's (Country Code Top Level Domains) - for example, .au, .uk, .za may take a few days until they are accessible on the Internet. Registration processing time is determined by the individual country's registry.

As a courtesy, your newly registered domain name will point to a generic "Coming Soon" web page.

Top of page

Is it possible for another person to register my domain name after I have registered it?

com, .net and .org domain name availability is verified by us and other accredited registrars through the SRS (Shared Registration System), a universal database of available .com, net and .org domain names.

This system prevents a domain name that is successfully registered through us from being registered through another domain name registration site.

.nz domain name availability is verified through a separate shared registry service.

Top of page

What methods of payment do you accept?

A valid MasterCard, Visa, American Express or Diners Card card is currently the only means of payment accepted.

Note: If you are interested in purchasing a large number of domain names please email us and describe your needs. We may be able to able to negotiate on your behalf to secure lower registration costs from the registries.

Top of page

What can I do with my domain name once it is registered?

You can use your newly registered domain name to sign up for email services web hosting services, register domain name servers or create a name for an email server. Alternatively, you are not required to do anything with your domain name.

Top of page

Once a domain name is registered, who is the legal owner of the domain name?

When a domain name is registered, the "owner" contracts the use of the domain name. However, there is no permanent registrant for any domain name. The "owner" of a domain name is the original administrative contact listed at the time of registration, regardless of whether the administrative contact information has been changed since then. In other words, the owner of a domain name is the individual whose name and contact information were initially associated with the username and password profile for the domain name.

If the administrative contact information has been changed since the original registration, the most recent administrative contact information entered will be visible in the WHOIS record. However, this information may not be that of the actual owner of the domain name.

Top of page

Where can I get contact information related to domain names that are already registered?

If the domain name is already registered, a link to the domain name will appear on the screen. By clicking on this link, you can connect to a page on which contact and other WHOIS information is displayed for the domain name.

For Interspeed's Windows hosting accounts, this can be done upon request. Please send your request here Contact Support and remember to include your preferred username and password.

General Warning

The MyPanel tool will overwrite existing .htaccess files. You should not be using this tool when you have existing .htaccess files with directives other than password protection.

You may also have to reinstall users and passwords if your password files are not in the default location. Password files are stored in a directory called .htpasswd in you home directory.

Warning to Frontpage Users

Using the MyPanel tool to restrict access to a site with FrontPage extensions will corrupt the extensions, requiring that they be reinstalled

Restricting access, adding users or assigning passwords to users should ONLY be done with the Tools | Permissions option in the FrontPage Explorer.

Form Mail

Do you have FormMail?

Yes, FormMail cgi scripting is preinstalled on Interspeed’s Linux hosting servers.

Simply place the following on the appropriate page and amend the ‘value’ fields to your own requirements.

<*FORM METHOD=POST ACTION="http://yourdomain.com/cgi-sys/FormMail.cgi"*>

<*input TYPE="hidden" name="recipient" value="sales@yourdomain.com"*>

<*input TYPE="hidden" name="subject" value="Order Form"*>

<*input TYPE="hidden" name="required" value="name, email"*>

<*input TYPE="hidden" name="redirect" value="http://yourdomain.com"*>

Please ensure you replace “yourdomain.com”, with your real domain name, and remove the "*" from the code.

Below is an example of using formmail, for the domain ‘slimming.com’.

<*FORM ACTION="http://slimming.com/cgi-sys/FormMail.cgi" METHOD="POST"*>

<*input TYPE="hidden" NAME=recipient VALUE="orders@slimming.com "*>

<*input TYPE="hidden" NAME=subject VALUE=" slimming.com Order Form"*>

<*input TYPE="hidden" NAME=required value="name, email">

<*input TYPE="hidden" NAME=redirect value="http://slimming.com/thankyou.html"*>

And can we secure Formmail?

Yes.

If the webpage you are trying is a secure form, the action the form performs must be a secure action as well. We use an example of a domain name of slimming.com and an order form called orderform.html.

The orderform.html file is uploaded into the normal web account directory.

The code you would insert into your webpage is as follows:

<*FORM ACTION="https://www.safetopay.com/cgi-sys/FormMail.cgi" METHOD="POST"*>

<*INPUT TYPE="hidden" NAME=recipient VALUE="orders@slimming.com"*>

<*INPUT TYPE="hidden" NAME=subject VALUE="slimming.com Order Form"*>

<*INPUT TYPE="hidden" NAME=redirect VALUE="https://www.safetopay.com/slimming.com/thankyou.html"*>

Microsoft FrontPage

What is FrontPage?

Microsoft FrontPage is a program that enables you to design your website without requiring you to have any programming knowledge.

It is a "WYSIWYG" program (What You See Is What You Get) - you can type the text and add pictures exactly as they will appear on your website.

Please visit Microsoft FrontPage for more information on FrontPage.

In order to be able to use FrontPage for your website you need to have your website hosted on a server which supports FrontPage extensions and have your hosting account enabled to use the extensions.

Does Interspeed support FrontPage extensions?

Yes, all of Interspeed’s Windows hosting servers support FrontPage extensions. We presently have Frontpage 2002 installed on all Windows servers.

How do I enable FrontPage extensions for my Interspeed hosting account?

For Windows hosting accounts, please Contact Support to have FrontPage extensions enabled.

Are there any costs involved?

No, enabling FrontPage extensions for your Interspeed hosting account is free of charge.

FTP

By far, the simplest way to manage your site content on Interspeed’s hosting servers is by using FTP.

You will need an FTP client [program]. (Many are available at Download.com). We recommend SmartFTP or CuteFTP. You can then use the FTP client to login to you hosting space with the username and password supplied by us when the account is created and transfer files and/or folders from your local computer to the server quite simply.

How do I use an FTP (File Transfer Protocol) program like CuteFTP to upload files to your server?

The first time you use CuteFTP, the Connection Wizard will start.

The Connection Wizard will prompt you for all the information required to connect to your site so you can upload your files to our server. You will be prompted for the following information:

- your ISP (Internet Service Provider) - choose one from the pull-down menu. If your ISP is not listed, select 'Other'.

- a name for your site (this can be anything you like).

- your ftp host address. You can enter your host address which is either your domain name either with or without ‘www’ in front. (Also, make sure to leave off the http:// ) As an example, if your website address is http://www.mydomain.co.nz you can enter either www.mydomain.co.nz or mydomain.co.nz

- your username. (the hosting account username we provide you with upon setup).

- your password. (the hosting account password we provide you with upon setup….or whatever you may have subsequently changed it to).

- the path for the directory containing the files you wish to upload. Press Browse to view the available directories on your computer. Click the directory containing the web pages you wish to upload. Please ensure your site content is always uploaded either to the ‘public_html’ directory [linux hosting] or the ‘www’ directory [windows hosting].

2. Alternatively, if you do not use the Connection Wizard, you will need to enter your FTP information using the Site Manager. Click the Site Manager icon on the upper left corner of your screen. Enter the information as described in step 2.

3. If you have set the FTP program to connect automatically, you will already be connected. If you have not, you can use the Site Manager to connect or click the “Quick Connect” icon.

4. The files on your computer will be displayed on the left side of the screen; your web files on our server will be displayed on the right side of the screen.

5. You can ‘drag and drop’ any files you wish to upload to our server. Click the desired file in your local directory and drag it across the screen to the remote directory.

Note: The page that you wish to come up automatically when someone visits your site (your home page) must be in the ‘public_html’ or ‘www’ folder and not in the root directory or another subfolder.

Can I FTP from a browser without using a program such as CuteFTP or WS_FTP?

Yes. (Although we recommend using an FTP program as it is generally easier, less prone to technical trouble and much quicker).

For this example, we are using Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.

1. Open your browser.

2. In the Address bar, where you would normally type the URL - for example, http://www.mydomain.co.nz - enter your host address with 'ftp' instead of 'http'. For example, ftp://www.mydomain.co.nz

3. A window will pop up asking for your username and password. If it does not, select ‘file’ and then ‘login as’ at the top of your browser.

Enter the username assigned to you when you joined Interspeed, for example: 'mydomain'. Enter the password assigned to you when you joined Interspeed (or whatever you may have subsequently changed it to).

Click [OK].

4. Your web files that are being stored on Interspeed’s servers will appear in your browser just as they would in a normal window. You can now open Windows Explorer, go to the directory containing the files you wish to upload to the Interspeed server and drag and drop (or cut and paste) the desired files to the Interspeed server. Once pasted or dragged to the Interspeed window, the files are uploaded. This technique can also be used to copy files from the Interspeed server to your computer.

How do I FTP upload my pages if my domain name is not yet delegated to Interspeed’s servers ?

You can upload your website before moving your domain name, thus avoiding any downtime as the domain is moved.

You can do this either via FTP [using the server IP as the host address] or through the file manager in your control panel access.

Hosting Space

Every Interspeed hosting account has a minimum of 100meg of hosting space / disk space allocated on the file servers.

For Linux hosting accounts, inside each hosting accounts home (root) directory is a subdirectory named public_html. Files placed in the "public_html" folder are visible to remote browsers over the internet.

For Windows 2003 hosting accounts, the files that are to be visible through the internet are placed within the “www” directory.

IP Address

An IP Address (Internet Protocol Address) is the standard way of identifying a computer that is connected to the Internet, much the way a telephone number identifies a telephone on a telephone network.

An IP address is four numbers separated by periods, and each number is less than 256. For example, 210.55.105.82.

Through-out the Asia Pacific region the body that allocates IP addresses has adopted, due to high IP address demand, strict allocation criteria. Typically one IP address is allocated per server/computer/machine in a network.

This makes IP addresses in very short supply. We are able to provide you with your own IP address in very restricted circumstances, including when you may need your own SSL certificate. There is a cost of $200/yr per IP address.

Linux Servers

What Linux servers does Interspeed run?

We use Debian with Apache web server.

Linux Debian Apache version is 2.2.3

What are the Interspeed mail server [POP & SMTP] settings?

If you are using email services through Interspeed, your incoming [POP] mail server should be set to: mail.yourdomain.com

(Make sure you replace ‘yourdomain.com’ with your real domain name)

For your outgoing [SMTP] mail, we prefer our clients to use your ISP’s outgoing mail server. This reduces our costs, server load and allows maximum resources to be allocated by the server to serving web pages.

For example: xtra’s outgoing mail server address is – smtp.xtra.co.nz

Ihug’s outgoing mail server address is – smtp.ihug.co.nz

Please check with your ISP to clarify what their outgoing mail server [SMTP] setting should be.

If there is a problem using your ISPs mail server to send email, you can use the Interspeed mail server address to send mail.

MyPanel

Administration Panel

The Administration Panel, MyPanel, is the Interspeed developed software platform that intelligently automates many of the functions involved in the deployment and management of domain names, web sites and email.

Hosting Automation at its best

The Administration Panel, MyPanel, is the Interspeed developed software platform that intelligently automates many of the functions involved in the deployment and management of domain names, web sites and email.

Interspeed clients can connect to the Administration Panel platform by Logging in here

Administration Panel functionality includes

  • Detailed Account Information and Reporting
  • Detailed Billing Information
  • Hosting Account Management
  • Domain Registration, Transfer, Renewal and Management Services
  • Managing additional services

For resellers, additional features include:

  • Client Management Tools
  • Client Billing Functionality

MySQL

The MySQL version we have installed is: 4.0.12.

MySQL databases are limited to 50MB in size. A size limit for mysql databases may seem unusual, given that we do not have a disk space limit. However, a database sits in the RAM of a computer, and large databases can "hog" most of the RAM. For this reason, we need to maintain database limits.

Passwords

How do I access MyPanel?

With Interspeed you have one main username and password that you use to access MyPanel. You may change that password once you are logged into MyPanel. You also have individual hosting account ftp usernames and passwords, and email account passwords.

How do I obtain or change my FTP password?

Log into your MyPanel at http://www.’yourdomain.com’/mypanel/ and proceed to the hosting accounts page. Select the hosting account, and then you may see the password, or use the change password function. The ftp password for that hosting account will be reset. If you have a Windows hosting account with Interspeed, however, you will need to email support to reset your FTP password.

How do I obtain and/or change a password for one of my email addresses?

Log into your MyPanel at http://www.’yourdomain.com’/mypanel/ and proceed to the hosting accounts page. Select the hosting account, and then click on the email link. You may see your password, or use the change password function.

Permissions

How do I change file permissions?

If you website is hosted on one of Interspeed’s Linux hosting servers you can change permissions by logging into your MyPanel, and going to the ‘file manager’.

Navigate to the folder or file you wish to change user permissions on, and click the number on the right of the file/folder (in the ‘perms’ column).

You then modify the file permissions as you require.

If your site is hosted on an Interspeed Linux server, you can also change permissions through most reputable ftp clients.

For example with Cute-FTP you can right-click on a file and get a pop-up menu. On that is an option CHMOD. This is the command to alter the permissions. (For example: script files (*.cgi, *.pl) need to be 755 to function correctly).

If your site is hosted on an Interspeed Windows server, changes to file permissions can only be done by the server administrator.

If you require this, please Contact Support with details of the changes you need.

Perl & Python

Can I use CGI or Perl Scripts on my site?

Yes, sure. You may use any CGI or Perl Script on Linux hosting accounts.

Each hosting account has it's own cgi-bin folder enabled which you can run .cgi and .pl (Perl) scripts from.

What is the correct path to Perl and other programs on Interspeed’s Linux hosting servers?

perl: /usr/bin/perl

perl-modules: /usr/share/perl/5.6.1

perl includes: /usr/lib/perl/5.6.1

sendmail: /usr/sbin/sendmail

date: /bin/date

python: /usr/bin/python

Domain server paths:

(using the example domain name fred.com)

Main dir: /virtual/fred.com/public_html/

Cgi-bin: /virtual/fred.com/cgi-bin/

Please Note

You will also need to make sure the scripts permissions are set to 755. You can change permissions through your control panel access and most reputable ftp clients.

Linux Platform PHP & Apache Upgrade FAQs

INTERSPEED LINUX PLATFORM PHP/APACHE UPGRADE - JUNE 2007

Why the changes?

The first reason is we'd like to be able to offer you PHP 5 for your web site(s). Secondly security. PHP has always been notoriously hard to secure from a hosting provider's perspective. Many don't bother and security breaches are common as a result.

We've just added a bunch of security measures for PHP scripts which will ensure the integrity of your site and data, as well as for others sharing the hosting platform.

Is my site affected?

We've upgraded the software with handles serving our your web files (Apache) to version 2.2.3. We've also introduced a number of new features to our PHP service so if you host a website with us and it runs PHP scripts you'll probably want to keep reading.

If you just host "static" content (html, images etc) or scripts written in another language (e.g Perl) then this FAQ isn't so much for you, since there shouldn't have been any change to the way your site content is delivered.

These changes have no bearing on Windows hosting accounts.

Why PHP 5?

PHP 5 is now the mainstream recommended version of PHP.

Interspeed always endeavors to run versions of software for its clients in line with current industry best-practices. This ensures not only that your website is always served by a robust, secure and fast hosting platform, but also that we can quickly apply security updates if and when they come out as our software is always up-to-date.

Although PHP 5 offers many new features, it's designed to be as compatible with earlier versions of PHP as possible with little functionality being broken in the process.

As part of this upgrade Interspeed has retained support for sites still requiring PHP 4, see the section on MyPanel PHP Options.

PHP 5 is now the default version of PHP enabled for each site hosted at Interspeed.

What else has changed?

  • We've changed from using Apache's mod_php4 to php-cgi (plus fastcgi).

This has implications if you use php_value or php_admin_value directives in htaccess files. See below for more details.

  • register_globals is now "Off" by default.

This is in line with industry best-practices seehere for more information.

If your PHP application still insists on register_globals being "On" you can enable it for your site using the new MyPanel PHP Options.

  • The open_basedir restriction is now in effect.
  • This restricts all PHP scripts to operating within the home user directory to which they belong for security reasons.

If for some reason your scripts need to access files outside of your home directory please contact us with the details and we can arrange it for you.

Help! My site is broken!

As part of the upgrade we've attempted to identify if your site(s) would work with PHP 5 plus any php.ini option requirements and pre-configured it for you if we've spotted any issues.

However, we can't test every page and it's possible we missed your site or script errors and have not altered its PHP options from the new defaults.

If you're getting errors on your site here is a list of common ailments and how to remedy them:

  • "register_globals is turned Off!" message.
  • You can enable register_globals for your site using the new MyPanel PHP Options.
Changes take 15 minutes to go through.

  • "Server Error!" page.
  • Do you have a custom .htaccess file in this directory? If it contains "php_value" or "php_admin_value" or "php_admin_flag" Apache directives these should be either removed or encased in an "<IfModule>" statement to ensure they're compatible with php-cgi e.g:

    <IfModule mod_php4.c>
    magic_quotes_runtime On
    </IfModule>

Configuration options such as these should now be set using the new MyPanel PHP Options interface. If an option there is not available and you require it please contact us about it.

  • My OSCommerce links don't work any more.
  • Try logging into OSCommerce as admin and setting the configuration option "Use Search-Engine Safe URLs (still in development)" to False.

You can implement safe search-engine URLs using .htaccess files and Apache mod_rewrite rules if required.

  • "file is writable /catalog/includes/configure.php" in the page header.
  • Using your FTP program "CHMOD" the file so that it is not writable.

  • "Object not found!" error.
  • Make sure you've typed the URL in correctly and that the files exist on the server. It's possible we had a custom Apache rule in for you which may still need updating. If you're sure the files are there and it should be working please contact us.

  • "Access Forbidden 403" error.
  • If you're using .htaccess files and overridding any Options directives make sure you have a "+" next to each e.g:

    Options +Indexes +FollowSymLinks +Includes

The new MyPanel "PHP Options" module.

This is available to any hosted site.

Log into MyPanel, select the account (if not already selected), click "services" then "PHP Options"

Spam Filtering

Under MyPanel->Services->Email Service you can edit spam policies, whitelists & blacklists (using the traffic light icon).

There is also a new table at the bottom showing the default policy on the domain.

Each pop account or alias can have its own anti-spam policies.

Anti-spam settings explained

Filtering policy

Using the drop down menu you can select the spam filtering policies on the particular email account to...

  • Uncensored (no virus or spam filtering)
  • No spam filtering
  • Spam is identified and tagged in inbox with [ ** SPAM ** ] in subject
  • Spam filtered as normal, no virus filtering
  • A range from Very permissive spam filtering [2/10] to Very aggressive spam filtering [10/10].

The default spam filtering for every email account on our mail server is “Normal virus and spam filtering [6/10]” - so this is what you account will be set to unless its has been customised by us in the past.

As well as the above policies for individual pop accounts these can also be applied to the whole domain.

Under Default Anti-spam Policy, policies and rules can be set for the domain as a whole. NB If you have additional mailboxes and/or aliases on the domain they will also inherit this policy, unless they have their own individual policies set up.

Whitelisted addresses

Here you can “Whitelist” email addresses (one at a time) that can bypass our spam filters and always be delivered for pop account or alias. When a pop account is whitelisted it is included in a white list - confirming that any emails from that address are acceptable and will be delivered to the Inbox.

Blacklisted addresses

Here you can “Blacklist” email addresses (one at a time) that always be marked as spam by our spam filters. When a pop account is blacklisted it is included in a black list - confirming that any emails from that address are NOT acceptable, and therefore will not be delivered to the Inbox.

Server Side Includes (SSI)

Can I use Server Side Includes (SSI) with my Interspeed hosting account?

Yes, both Interspeed's Linux and Windows servers are set up to process any file with an extension of .shtml as an SSI enabled page.

If you require any SSI scripts to run, ensure the page is a .shtml file. For example, filename.shtml will work.

Shell Accounts (SSH)

Can I have telnet or SSH access to my Interspeed hosting account?

Due to the ever increasing activities of malicious internet users, we have been forced to implement a mandatory policy that denies shell access.

Secure Socket Layers (SSL)

SSL (Secure Socket Layers) make sure that the information being sent to and from the website is unreadable by anyone in between.

SSL is the encryption method used to ensure secure transactions on the Internet. Information from our secure server is encrypted to and from the customer. This means any sensitive information (eg: credit card information) can be sent safely.

Use our free shared SSL certificates

You may use (for no cost) our shared SSL certificates (https://www.safetopay.com and https://www.securetopay.com) which will give you an URL such as https://www.safetopay.com/yourdomain.com/ or https://www.securetopay.com/yourdomain.com/

Shared SSL access is free, and setup by default on all Linux hosting accounts. For example, if your hosting account was on a Linux server with a domain name of handles.com and the web page you wish to secure is called order.htm your web page would be located at https://www.safetopay.com/handles.com/order.htm

On our Windows servers you would use the shared SSL certificate (https://www.securetopay.com) which will give you an URL such as https://www.securetopay.com/yourdomain.com/. For example, if your hosting account was for handles.com and the page you wish to secure is called order.htm your web page would be located at https://www.securetopay.com/handles.com/order.htm

Shared SSL access can be enabled upon request for Windows hosting accounts. Please Contact Support to request this.

Private SSL Certificate

You may also purchase your own private SSL certificate which will give you an URL such as https://www.yourdomain.com. There is an initial purchase and setup cost, cost for your own IP address, as well as annual costs for the yearly renewal of the SSL certificate.

Streaming Media

What is streaming media ?

"Streaming" allows the user to see a video or hear a sound or music instantly, as the file is downloading. Without “streaming”, the user must wait until the whole file is downloaded before they can hear or see it.

Do Interspeed’s servers support streaming media ? If so, what type (format)?

Yes, our hosting servers have streaming media enabled for both Real Media and Windows Media formats.

What is Windows Media and Real Media?

Windows Media and Real Media are file formats that allow sounds, music or video to be delivered over the internet by "streaming", as opposed to downloading.

Subdomains

What is a subdomain and why would I want one?

A subdomain is like an extension to your ‘root’ domain name. For example, you may register the domain name, ‘mydomain.com’. A subdomain would be something like ‘sales.mydomain.com’, ‘info.mydomain.com’ [or similar].

A new entry is made in the DNS records for the root [or parent] domain to create a subdomain.

You can use a subdomain in the same way as you would a normal root domain, that is: you can have it hosted as a website, you can have email services, you can point it to a URL, and so forth.

How much does it cost to create a subdomain?

Subdomains may be created through MyPanel. There is no additional cost with the Unlimited Plan or Partner Plan. With any other Plan the creation of a sub-domain is regarded as a whole separate hosting account.

Third Party COM Objects

Can I install my own custom or third party COM objects on Interspeed´s hosting servers?

Yes, this is possible, however installation is subject to investigation and final approval of the server object by the system administrator, and incurs a minimum once off fee of $99- [+GST].

Interspeed´s Custom and Third Party Control / Com Object Policy

The Object of this document is to outline the procedures and policies in regards to Interspeed customers uploading third party or custom COM objects to our servers for use on their sites.

This document is broken into two parts, one for third party controls, the second for custom built COM objects.

Third Party Controls

The following information has to be presented to Interspeed for a third party control to be loaded onto the servers.

  • A registered version of the control
  • Proof that the control is licensed to the customer for Internet usage.
  • Documentation of functionality from the manufacturer.
  • Example code from the website in which the control is to be used.

We prefer that the website using the control is developed on a personal server and when the customer is happy that the third party control works the way they want they upload a copy of that site to Interspeed´s servers and send us the COM object and relevant information.

Custom COM objects

The following information has to be presented to Interspeed for a custom control to be loaded onto the servers.

  • A compiled version of the control
  • The source code for the control
  • Documentation stating what other controls or objects this component relies on.
  • Example code from the website in which the control is to be used.

Again we prefer that this is developed and tested on a personal server before it is sent to Interspeed Components will only be accepted if they are developed in Visual Basic, Borland Delphi or Microsoft C++.

COM Objects must be able to run under Microsoft Transaction Server (MTS) to ensure server stability and to ensure only privileged users (e.g. websites) are allowed to use the COM object.

COM Objects are installed into a directory on the server where only the website has read access to the object.  We do not allow write access to that directory for security purposes.

The MTS COM+ Application is run under the website´s administrative logon to allow the object to read/write/delete any part of the website that called an instance of the COM+ Application.

We do not under any circumstance allow a Custom COM Object full administrative access to the server.

The Service Charge

The $99 +GST charge covers installation of the COM object onto the Interspeed servers and two hours of investigation to ensure a COM object will not affect the integrity or reliability of the Interspeed servers.  If, after initial investigation, the COM object is found to be too complex to fully check, the customer will be notified that additional charges may apply.

Website Promotion

How can I increase the amount of people that visit my website, and how can I have my site listed on search engines?

We see many excellent quality web sites. However, that is only part of the battle. You must be able to get people to your web site. For this purpose, Interspeed can provide a website placement service.

When users type a keyword or phrase into a search engine query box, they receive a listing of websites that presumably offer information, products or services related to that keyword. Search engines strive to list the most qualified websites at the top of the list.

What services can Interspeed provide?

Interspeed provides MySubmit, which provides a complete web site optimisation, promotion and placement service.

Also web site keywording - keywords and meta-tags are added to your web content by our professional Web development team. This is normally only required once per site. Set-up fee $50. Request this via MyPanel, login and order from there.

Website Statistics

Interspeed provides a comprehensive web site statistics program called ModLogan to clients with both Linux and Windows hosting accounts.

Can I check web usage statistics for my website?

You can check your website traffic statistics through your MyPanel access.

Can I access the raw log files for my site?

Yes, this can be setup upon request.

Please Contact Support to have this enabled for you.

Web Site Template - FAQs

1. What are the advantages of using a web site template?

The major advantage is price: You get a high quality design at low cost. You don't have to hire a web designer or graphic designer, we take care of all that for you. The second advantage is the time frame: It usually takes 10-25 days for a good web designer to produce a web page of such quality. With a template this can be done in significantly less time, which saves you costs.

2. What do I receive when I order a web site template?

If you paid by Online Banking or your Credit Card, an email will be sent to your email address detailing your order. We then need to go over all details on the web site content with you so we can add it to your web site. The time this process takes varies, depending on how fast you can get the content to us. We can usually do this within 10 days maximum.

3. In what formats are your templates available?

Web site templates are available in Photoshop and HTML formats. Fonts are included with Photoshop file. In most templates HTML is compatible with Adobe GoLive, Macromedia Dreamweaver and Microsoft Frontpage.

4. What am I allowed and not allowed to do with the templates?

You may:

• Have a web site built using the template in any way you like.

You may not:

• Resell or redistribute templates (like we do).

• Claim intellectual or exclusive ownership to any of our products, modified or unmodified. All products are property of content providing companies and individuals.

• Make more than one project using the same template (you have to purchase the same template once more in order to make another project with the same design)

5. What is the difference between unique and non-unique purchase?

NON-UNIQUE PURCHASE:

Non-unique purchase means that other people can buy the template you have chosen some time later.

UNIQUE PURCHASE:

Unique purchase guarantees that you are the last person to buy this template. After an exclusive purchase occurs the template is being permanently removed from the sales directory and will never be available to other customers again. Only you and people who bought the template before you will own it.
A unique purchase can cost a further $3000NZ + depending on the design.

6. Is it reasonable to make unique purchase of template that was already purchased before?

Yes. There is very little chance that you will find the same design on the net. There are more than 3,000,000,000 web pages online now according to statistics on www.google.com .

7. Is the license a one-time fee payment?

Yes, the payment for your template is a one-time fee without any additional charges. After purchasing you may use the template as many times as you need for one web site.

8. Is it possible for me to pay one price and have access to all web site templates for a certain amount of time?

Sorry, we do not provide membership based services.

9. Do you have a return policy?

Since our company is offering non-tangible irrevocable goods we do not issue refunds after the product is shipped, which you are responsible for understanding upon purchasing any article at our site. Please make sure that you've carefully read 'sources available' section. We only make exceptions with this rule when the product appears to be not-as-described on a case by case basis in agreement of the parties concerned. The deadline for any refund claim is one week after the delivery date.

10. I ordered a template web site , but haven't received any email information.

In this case please contact our Administration Department.

14. What software do you recommend for maintaining HTML code?

There are numerous choices for web design software. We think that Macromedia Dreamweaver is one of the best packages.

15. How can I modify flash portion of the template?

You need to use Macromedia Flash to edit animated part of the template. Please visit the site of the developer: http://www.macromedia.com/software/

16. When I try to open the flash fla file, I get an error Unexpected file format.

This means that .fla file is incompatible with your Flash version. Please install Flash MX to edit this file or get in touch with our design department to have the file converted to an appropriate version.

17. Can I edit flash template in Swish?

No. Our flash templates can be edited only with Macromedia Flash.

Virtual Hosting

What is Virtual Hosting?

Having virtual hosting means your website, along with many others, is located on a computer that is connected to the internet via a very fast link 24hrs a day, 7 days a week, all year round.

If you were to host your website privately it would cost you far more than the price of an Interspeed hosting account.

Due to economies of scale, Interspeed can afford to offer high quality hosting at a low fee.

Can I resell Interspeed’s Virtual Hosting Services?

Yes, resellers are always welcome. Learn More

Datacenter

The key features in any data centre are redundancy and security.

Redundancy

Data centre network hardware

The network infrastructure is in most cases fully redundant. The data centre has multiple routers and multiple switches. Should hardware fail the built in redundancy ensures that any potential downtime is mitigated.

Electricity

The data centre electricity supply is physically protected. In the event of power supply failure, UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply) units automatically provide power. The UPS units provide power supply to racks until such time as the diesel generator takes over the supply of electricity.

Bandwidth

The facility is multihomed. Meaning that the core network infrastructure and connectivity is supplied by multiple providers.

Security

Access to the facility is controlled and monitored.

Structure

The data center is an extremely robust structure.

Alarmed

The building as a whole is alarmed. The data centre itself is also alarmed. The data centre is permanently locked, including when work is being undertaken inside.

Temperature Controlled

The area is temperature controlled to provide the optimum environment for computer equipment.

Private SSL Web Server Certificates

A private SSL Web Server Certificate on your website, displays the identity of the website owner, and the name of the independent authority who verified that identity. The Web Server Certificate connects at 128 bit, 56 bit or 40 bit depending on the client's browser capability.

Why do I need my own SSL Web Server Certificate?

Let's say you have a domain name: monopoly.com, with an account username of monoploy, and a web page of order.html.

When you use the Interspeed secure server certificate to secure a web page on your web site, the address people see in their web browser is https://www.safetopay.com/~monopoly/order.html.

If you have your own certificate, the details seen in the web browser would be: https://www.monopoly.com/order.html.

Your own secure server certificate provides additional credibility and re-assurance to your clients.

A private SSL Web Server Certificate also enables your customers to view the following information:

  • The domain for which the certificate was issued. This allows them to check that the SSL Web Server Certificate was issued for your domain (URL).
  • The owner of the certificate. This acts as further reassurance, since customers are able to see whom they are doing business with.
  • The physical location of the owner. Once again this reassures customers that they are dealing with an actual entity.
  • The validity dates of the certificate. This is extremely important, since it shows users that your SSL Web Server Certificate is current.

A secure server certificate costs $400- for purchase and installation, and a further $200- per year for your own unique IP address.

There are annual certificate renewal fees of $400-, and $200- per year for the IP address.

Search Engine Optimisation

What we do

Our whole approach is about optimising your web site for search engines.

The basics are:

  • Analysis of key words for your site
  • Adding relevant external and internal links
  • Optimising each page
  • Reporting on results, and revising the approach if necessary

More specifically we will / are likely to:

  • Advise re web site content (real content). Build one page of content as often as you can, and get it online and put online.
  • Advise regarding a domain name. For example, you want "google.com" and not "mykeyword.com".
  • Advise regarding site design. The simpler the better. Speed is very important - keep pages small, and images even smaller.
  • Use the keyword once in title, once in description tag, once in a heading etc
  • Outbound Links: From every page, link to one or two high ranking sites under that particular keyword.
  • Inbound links: Look around your keyword sector in Google. Find sites that have links pages or freely exchange links, and get them to link to you.

and a whole range of other things....
